How do I use Social Media?
by snow on Jun.05, 2010, under blog
Social Media seems like a given for any entrepreneur or business nowadays, just like not having a website and a business e-mail address is out of the question.
As a freelance artist and photographer, how do I use my social media? I would like to share how I use social media to connect with my clients, collectors, and people who care about my artistic journey. This is by no means a role model, but merely a guide for people who want to know where to find appropriate information on my practice.
This is my extended portfolio site. I just can’t possibly put all the images up on my website. Here I share new portraits or artworks. Of course I also announce any upcoming events here.

Here is the most immediate update on what I do. It’s usually updated throughout the day, although I do take Twittercation sometimes. I share experiences such as my favourite restaurants in town, my traveling agenda, and what I am doing in my studio that day. If I come back from a portrait session soaked in rain, you’re sure to hear about it on Twitter. I also love to share neat things I find online on Twitter, whether it’s relevant articles on art and/or photography, or events that would be of interest to fellow artists or to my clients.

My youtube videos will never compete against the quirky “Will it blend?” or the ridiculously sweet “Otters Holding Hands.” That’s okay, fine art has never been the mainstream. Here is an archive of all my television interviews. It’s funny–People would come up to me months or even years later and tell me about my TV interview. Thank you to my Toastmasters experience that I don’t look nervous on the screen…
Have you watched any of the videos?
This is where you land when you type in my website url. The blog is updated at least weekly. Often when you go to a static website, you see all the finished work, but how about all the steps behind the scene? Rather than using my blog as an additional portfolio site, I share intimate information on what I do as an artist when I am not on assignment–where I go, what I see, and what I read. Sometimes I also post works in progress, which will never make their way to the website. (Imagine the look of horror on my face!) Other times I also talk about subjects that friends or clients have asked me for advise. If someone has asked me in person, chances are more people in the cyber world wants to know. On occasion, I also share some special portrait sessions or weddings here.
Please leave a comment at the end of this blog entry!
Okay, this is not really a social media tool, and it’s considered old-school in 2010. It is, however, still necessary. All the standard information, such as pricing and the core portfolio, stays on the website. Potential clients can browse through the website and have a sense of my style and breadth of my works. It’s not meant to be updated frequently, as I would love to give my wonderful web designer Gee Gen a break!

Looks like you have it figured out! Social networking is such a new form of marketing, especially for independant, small businesses and service providers such as yourself. Good work!
