Creative people often whine about how their clients don’t appreciate the artistic genius, and fail to recognize the masterpieces. Being a creative professional for hire, I admit that often clients’ favourites may not be my best works. For the next little while, I would like to share with you my top 10 favourite landscape and portrait photographic images, and my top 10 favourite drawings/paintings. They may not be my most technically successful images–they may not even be popular. However, I would drown myself in tears if I lose any of these images permanently.
The Cherry Blossoms in Snow
It was a snowy morning in April Vancouver. The cotton candy cherry blossoms were in full bloom. The spring colours were everywhere. It was a dark deep quiet Saturday when it started snowing. The entire world was gently blanketed in a light layer of fine white powder.
Sunday morning, I drove to Queen Elizabeth Park where the blossoms were still in full bloom. People were sparse–it was still early on a Sunday morning. I had 20 minutes to capture what I wanted. As I walked back to my car, the shrinking patches of snow were turning grey and compact until people’s feet. I got my shots, just in time.
This is one of my favourite images because I may never be able to reproduce this image. Technical excellence is easy to reproduce when you have mastered your craft. However, if the world decides not to give me another pristine icy shower on cherry blossoms in my lifetime, I am not prepared to make my own Styrofoam snow.
