Christmas Special–Designer T-Shirts

by snow on Nov.28, 2011, under blog

“After my studio opening on 12th November, numerous friends and friends’ friends have been asking me for T-shirts with my Into the Woods tree drawings. I have listened, and am finally soft launching my first Into the Woods Collection T-shirts.”

Into the Woods Drawings–Trees of Life

In Michelle Kuen Suet Fung’s popular ink and color pencil drawings Into the Woods, a tree, some imaginary and some realistic, hovers on the quiet 15×22” white watercolour paper. The drawings depict the entire tree from the tip of its branches to its long deep roots. The dry rough tree trunk and the soft translucent petals are communicated through the delicate lines by ink, and accentuated by the sometimes almost-monochromatic and sometimes vivid rendering.

At times, there is a big-eyed girl swinging on a noose; other times, an unidentifiable figure points his/her bottom skyward, half hidden by the tree. There is no horizon line to stabilize one’s vision. The reward is a gentle world of hues, fleeting moments and poetry.

Studio Grand Opening Reception

by snow on Nov.17, 2011, under blog

Staff in Staff T-shirts

After months of preparations, last Saturday saw the grand opening reception of my studio.

There are numerous things to be thankful for. Here is a brief list:

- Every guest seemed to have enjoyed themselves. The complimentary art jam brought out the artistic edge of many guests, especially the little young ones!

- Some magazines and newspapers found my practice and studio interesting enough to write about.

- This event would not have been possible without the help and support from all my friends and families. Thank you to my parents who invite all their friends, to Schindler who shot and edited the event’s video, and who was the photographer at the event, to Andrea who listened to my brainstorming day after day, to William and Diana who made sure things ran smoothly.

I am immensely grateful that the opening was not perfect. The room for improvement motivates me to learn and to evolve. I have learnt that not everything needs to be perfect. The most important thing is to cherish the opportunity and enjoy every second of it. (Of course in order to do that, good preparation is called for!)

Pre-Studio Opening Interviews

by snow on Nov.08, 2011, under blog

Photo at the radio station with the two lovely hosts

Last Friday I was invited to a live radio interview for the programme 思潮作動 of RTHK Radio 2. The radio host Tony Woo and various guest hosts interview different people every night to introduce cultural, social and historical topics to the listeners. First of all, I was impressed by Tony came to my studio for a pre-interview chat. Even though he said he would only stay for half an hour, he ended up staying for 2 hours! (Hm…I hope I didn’t talk too much…)

I was nervous during the interview not only because it was my longest live interview ever, but also because I had never been so personal in media interviews. I was so nervous that I even forgot to take a photo inside the recording studio! My first time in a recording studio! The hour-long interview was in Cantonese. Please click here to listen.

These are some of the artworks we talked about in the programme:

Into the Woods IV

H for Heart-broken

E for Envy

B for Betrayal

And thank you to blogger diva Gillian Chu who did a fabulous interview on my practice. I am impressed by the way writers can shape ideas into words so precisely and poetically. Gillian has completely condensed my answers into prose that are not only easy to understand, but beautiful to read. Thank you Gillian.

Michelle Kuen Suet Fung 馮捲雪

Intricate, delicate and very cute drawings and paintings by Chinese Canadian artist Michelle Kuen Suet Fung.
