October Studio Sharing Session

by snow on Oct.03, 2011, under blog

Group photo of October studio sharing session.

Last Sunday saw the second monthly studio sharing session at my studio. We again had a full house, perhaps a tad too full for the wee studio again.

It was very interesting for me to see how the second gathering developed completely differently from the first. I knew almost none of the artists this month, so there was a lot of getting to know the group for me as well.

The first group in September stuck fairly closely to reviewing each artist’s portfolio, whereas the second group was much more fluid and the conversation digressed beautifully from our portfolio for an extended period. Each artist shared their own experiences and expertise in pricing, dealing with clients and other invaluable personal stories. I find these informal sharing the gem of any gathering with fellow professionals, especially for a professional that requires long hours of solitary work.

Again, thank you all for coming to my wee studio yesterday. I was blown away by everyone’s talent. November will see a pause on the monthly studio sharing session, as my studio grand opening will take place then. There will be another gathering in December! See you then!

Studio Opening + Private Studio Sharing Sessions

by snow on Sep.18, 2011, under blog

Thank you Art of Asia for the first media coverage of my studio grand opening reception. The official invitation has yet to be finished as details are being finalized. I’m so excited as I gather information for framing, promotional materials and all the little things that has to do with organizing an event.

Grand Opening Reception of Artist Michelle Kuen Suet Fung’s Studio

Date: 12 November, 2011 (Sat)

Time: 2pm – 6pm

Location: 20C Asia Harvest Commercial Centre,

324 Shau Kei Wan Road, Hong Kong

All are Welcome

Free Admission

My former English teacher (who will happen to be in Hong Kong then!) asked me if my studio is as small as I described it, how will it fit all the people. I said, that’s a happy problem that I will worry about later.

Last month saw the first monthly artists sharing session in my studio. I recognize how artists can be lonely professionals and our need for regular informal interactions with other artists. We are locked in our studios most of the times. Even when we go to openings or other art-related events, it’s often not about the creative process.

The mandate of these sessions is to connect and receive encouragement and inspiration from other creative souls in the city. Everyone is asked to contribute to the discussion. Thank you to all who attended, and my sincere apology for those I had to turn away for the lack of space.

There was a lot of laughter, constructive comments and inspiration I must say. And I appreciate all the kind feedback from fellow artists/illustrators who attended. I definitely had lots of fun and can’t wait until next month’s session!

Life in the Studio…

by snow on Aug.23, 2011, under blog

1. Shower is first thing in order as soon as I arrive at the studio. Things may be different when autumn hits Hong Kong.
2. I work very hard in the studio, always sweating through my shirt–the brand-new air-conditioner decided not to work during the hottest month of the year!
3. It’s wonderful to be able spread out the paintings to dry without needing to move them constantly.

4. Right now I rely on my iphone for all communication needs from the studio.
5. I usually listen to RTHK Radio 2/Radio 4 or an audio book when I work in the studio. Right now I’m listening to A Portrait of a Young Man as an Artist by James Joyce. My first Joyce.

My friendly dehumidifier guarding my artworks.

6. Due to the humidity in Hong Kong, I acquired a dehumidifier to protect my works.

My new paint palette!

7. When I’m not drawing or painting, I read art books or magazines. Right now I’m brushing up on art auctions and contemporary Chinese artists. There is so much talent in the Mainland. Chen Ke is an artist who also works in the style of Pop Surrealism, yet her works are sold for millions RMB already.
8. It’s difficult to pinpoint my favourite thing in the studio. If I really have to choose, it would be the bright yellow sink cabinet in the bathroom.

My yellow sink cabinet in the bathroom!

9. I love how nice the guards are in the building. During office hours, they open the door and push the elevator  button for you.
10. The elevator is quite slow in the building. I usually have time to check if I have my keys, my phone, close the front door and fix my hair before the elevator arrives.

Details of "V for Virginity" in progress

11. I’m already falling in love with the neighbourhood Shau Kei Wan. I’m becoming regular patrons of a few eateries right downstairs. I love taking my environmentally-friendly metal container to buy wonton noodles downstairs. It reminds me of the beautiful scene in In the Mood of Love (Watch the clip here!)
12. Last but not the least, I have started inviting people to hang out in the studio. If you would like to see the studio, please contact me for an appointment! If you don’t have time, browse through the online galleries or online shop!
