Pre-Studio Opening Interviews
by snow on Nov.08, 2011, under blog

Photo at the radio station with the two lovely hosts
Last Friday I was invited to a live radio interview for the programme 思潮作動 of RTHK Radio 2. The radio host Tony Woo and various guest hosts interview different people every night to introduce cultural, social and historical topics to the listeners. First of all, I was impressed by Tony came to my studio for a pre-interview chat. Even though he said he would only stay for half an hour, he ended up staying for 2 hours! (Hm…I hope I didn’t talk too much…)
I was nervous during the interview not only because it was my longest live interview ever, but also because I had never been so personal in media interviews. I was so nervous that I even forgot to take a photo inside the recording studio! My first time in a recording studio! The hour-long interview was in Cantonese. Please click here to listen.
These are some of the artworks we talked about in the programme:

Into the Woods IV

H for Heart-broken

E for Envy

B for Betrayal
And thank you to blogger diva Gillian Chu who did a fabulous interview on my practice. I am impressed by the way writers can shape ideas into words so precisely and poetically. Gillian has completely condensed my answers into prose that are not only easy to understand, but beautiful to read. Thank you Gillian.

"X for Ex's" in progress drying in the studio
Thank you to dear friend and collector Pascal who shared the following insight into my art out of the blue with me over a warm electronic mail (yes, it is paradoxical but possible!)

"Z for Zeal" in progress drying in the studio

"I for Infidelity" drying in the studio.

Details of "V for Virginity" in progress.
“I have noticed over the last few months the apparition in your drawings and photos, a certain emphasis for details, very accurate details, like the vulture in your wood painting with the virgin. It reminded me of the extreme abundant etching you were doing at the beginning about legend and tales.

Early Work. "Dreadful in Truth", Kiryu Misao
What I have also noticed is in your tiny little girlish character, the apparition of sculpting, lots around the arms but also a change from the formulaic pose to much more subtle realistic postures, very human, as in emotionally loaded.
So all in all, what I picked up upon is a more personal journey, where little bits of your deep personal life come through and seep through into mature sensitive details. I like it because the chism between the little figurine and the animals, objects… is working towards a reconciliation where your hyperrealism takes a touch of deeply personal emotional expression.”

"H for Heartbroken." One of the first two alphabet paintings.

"U for Unrequited Love." One of the first two alphabet paintings.
Pascal and I met when he commissioned a photographic piece for his bedroom almost six years ago. We have since then become close friends. See the piece he collected here!
Thank you Pascal!

Head of the girl in Q for Quarrel emerging.

After a while...

Done with the ink! It's late and I had to turn the lights on, hence the yellow cast!

Putting finishing touches on the alphabet paintings.
L for Loss

L for Loss
Neat thing that happened last week: artist friend Norman de Brackinghe was so taken by L for Loss in my studio that he phoned me the next day to tell me that he’d dreamt of the lizard the night before. He has been addressing all his subsequent messages to “Michelle and lizard.”
Michelle Kuen Suet Fung 馮捲雪
Intricate, delicate and very cute drawings and paintings by Chinese Canadian artist Michelle Kuen Suet Fung.
