I have made a point to read something industry-related at least for 15 minutes daily. The book that is beside my bed now is “At Home with Art” by Tiddy Rowan.

It’s a beautiful coffee table book that guides the general public on defining or starting an art collection. While I wish the author would go into depth with some topics (each topic is only 2 pages long), I am in love with so many quotes from the book already! Rowan is able to define something as abstract, versatile and loaded as a creative process” into words that are so understandable and poetic.

Here is my favourite quote so far:

“When an artist creates a piece of art, there is somewhere in that sorcerous process a spontaneous response to imagery. The imagery that is employed depends on the artist’s influences and imagination. When we see or choose a piece of art that we like, it is because we are drawn to that artist’s way of thinking and seeing and his or her used of those influences. They may be nostalgic or futuristic or provocative or etheral – but in choosing that art we become, ipso facto, artists ourselves. It’s as though we agree with what is being depicted – or that if we were to create a piece of art this would be the piece we would create. i have asked many artists what art they would buy themselves and, after a little thought, most of them have said that they would choose the sort of art that they themselves create.” (page 23)

I can’t agree with it more. I look at my wee art collection. Almost everything is cute and detailed.

I am only 1/3 through the book. I can’t wait to finish it, but at the same time, I will be sad when I finish this good book. Dear readers, I highly recommend this entertaining and easy-to-read book for your bathroom or bedroom. The full-colour plates brighten up your day, and the words are not only beautiful, but informative!

Michelle Kuen Suet Fung 馮捲雪

Intricate, delicate and very cute drawings and paintings by Chinese Canadian artist Michelle Kuen Suet Fung.
