With my limited art prints, I always offer a free gift sent to their address when they send me a picture of the art in their space.

Over the weekend, I got a picture of a framed “Into the Woods XXI: Fallen Blossoms” from Surrey, BC, Canada. I love seeing how my art lives in the collectors’ homes.

Do you have a piece of my art in your home? Send me a picture today, and you too can get a free gift.

Japanamerica–Must Read!

Many of my friends, especially my caucasian ones, are mystified and frustrated over my drawn girls. The heads are the size of their torsos, and their absurdly large tea-cup eyes are about to fall off their faces. Most importantly, they cannot comprehend why a dot can be a nose. I have had so many friends who just take the liberty of drawing a mushroom-shaped nose, complete with its tip, bridge and nostrils, over my dot. Thank God my friends are sensitive enough to only do that when I doodle–not on my final drawings or paintings.

I recently finished Roland Kelt’s Japanamerica. Wow, I think it has got to be my favourite book since Don Thompson’s The $12 Million Stuffed Shark: The Curious Economics of Contemporary Art. (A must-read pageturner for art lovers and laypersons alike. A fascinating read on the economics of art.)

I shrieked in delight when I have read the following passage. I thought, that’s right! That’s why my girls look the way they do!

“Japanese expressionism is defined by subtraction.” Says Anime Style editor Hideko Ono. “A pretty or cute girl is drawn with huge eyes down to the eyelashes, and the hair is drawn to the fine details—every strand. But the ear is not shown. They only draw the parts they want. The eyes are big for sensitivity, the breasts are big, but no one wants to see nostrils, so you leave them out.” (page 214) (continue reading…)

Last Vancouver Event Announced–2nd Annual Patron Appreciation Day

by snow on Jan.04, 2011, under blog

Patron-Appreciation-Event-2011-largertext

There are only a few short months left before I leave behind almost two decades of life in Vancouver and pursue a new chapter in Hong Kong.

I will certainly miss Vancouver and all my collectors here. Before I go, I would love to see all of you again with my newest works.

Join me for a mellow spring afternoon to chat with the artist, and to enjoy Granville Island–one of the places I will certainly miss.

At this 2-afternoon only event, I will bring all the “Into the Woods” original drawings with me. You might have seen them on the screen often. Don’t miss the last chance to see them in person in Vancouver. After the event, they will travel to Hong Kong with me.

Not only is this event completely free, but there will also be gift with purchase, as well as gift with RSVP.

If you cannot make the event and are interested in the works, contact me for a studio visit. Small (8×12″) art prints are available at Ainsworth Custom Design as well. See the complete range of art prints in the online shop.

Map to Ainsworth Custom Design. (It’s the same place as last year’s Patron Appreciation Event.)

Yesterday I spent a much-needed day in the studio working on my art. Besides a two-hour client consultation in the afternoon and occasional e-mailing and tweeting, I focused my entire existence on my next alphabet painting: B for Betrayal.

Michelle Kuen Suet Fung 馮捲雪

Intricate, delicate and very cute drawings and paintings by Chinese Canadian artist Michelle Kuen Suet Fung.
